And so it seems that the inevitable is happening, and I will indeed be turning 30 tomorrow.
Even though I've kind of dreaded this day for the past few years, I actually feel quite excited about it right now. There's a sort of calmness.
Besides, I already did the whole age crisis thingy at 20 when I attended an audition and a ballet teacher told me they couldn't accept me to the school because I was too old. Yup, it's not only the fashion industry that idealizes youth.
Last Monday I saw such an elegant lady at the gym and for a moment I could catch a glimpse of my (hopefully) future self in her. She was wearing an olive green sweater and had her white hair twisted up in a clip and she just looked positively elegant and happy. She had that kind of calm and wise aura only older people can have, and I thought I have to remember this comforting moment whenever I start panicking about getting older.
I've been on the lookout for other good & comforting things to look forward to as you get older, and thought I'd share them with you.
Not caring what others think
The older I get the less I care about what others think. Even though I think I've always been a bit of a rebel at heart, at the same time I've been very busy people pleasing and trying to be the perfect student, girlfriend, daughter etc. I look forward to tread my path with more and more self confidence as I go along.
No one really cares that much about wrinkles
I can't recall a single time thinking somebody was less attractive because they were wrinkly. I've started seeing some suspicious lines around my eyes, and I'm guessing my face won't always be as smooth as it is now (although I'm already looking back wishfully to my 16 year old baby skin *sigh*), but as I get older I'm going to remind myself that wrinkles are part of aging gracefully, no matter what the beauty industry tries to tell me.
I'm also going to remind myself that when I was younger, I never judged or cared that anyone older had wrinkles. It's really not such a big deal.
Giving others advice
A few years ago I did a theater project with a lot of teenage girls, and the most rewarding part of it was to be able to give advice to younger people in similar situations as you'd been yourself at that age. It's nice being able to be the teacher every once in a while.
Having more money
Hopefully. I'm looking forward to the day I finally get to say it “you know what, I made it”, whatever and however “it” will be and look like. Money is not my main goal in life, but it would be nice to be able to have that freedom financial stability undoubtedly can provide.
Being better in the kitchen
I hope as I get older I'll get more patient in the kitchen. I love eating and every once in a while I get excited about trying new recipes and stuff, but most of the time I'm just too lazy to make a serious effort. If I can't become a better cook for myself maybe I will for my future kids or grand kids :)
Being able to do a splits or a hand stand in your 20's is not THAT impressive, but imagine being able to do those things when you're 40 or 50, now that's instant coolness guaranteed.
Alright, I'm off to start my third decade on this planet! Wish me good luck haha :)
